The Missional Church – A Simple Explanation

February 12, 2015 by 2

This is a transcription of the audio of a YouTube video used relative to our morning service on 15 February 2015.

This is the Missional Church: simple.

In the past, churches have spent large amounts of resources to construct the most attractive places imaginable for the community in which they were situated.

Great music, compelling teaching, and a host of programmes designed to gather people together were the staple of such church communities.

Anyone who wanted to come was welcome, and church members were encouraged to invite their friends and neighbours.

Generally, people had a pleasant experience.

The people who came – and were cared for – seemed relatively similar. Education, income, pastimes, race, struggles and histories seemed to be almost identical.

Eventually, someone asked the question: what about all the other people who aren’t like us but who live around us?

Why aren’t they here too? [Read more…]

Fruitfulness in Scripture

February 12, 2015 by 2

The “Fruitfulness on the Frontline” series of Sermons began on 08 February 2015 at St James with the theme “Fruitfulness in Scripture” –

This morning we start on our major theme for the next nine weeks.

We are going to be looking at fruitfulness on the frontline.

What do we mean by “frontline”?

We all have different frontlines.

They would like to  thank those who so generously donated online, contributed to the coffee morning on Saturday 31 January 2015 and who put up with “their grumpiness at nae being able tae enjoy an occasional glass of wine”. [Read more…]

8 Things Jesus Never Said

February 1, 2015 by 2

Rev. Graham Crawford’s Sermon for the Morning Service at St James on 01 February 2015:

The problem

On Tuesday morning I sat down at my desk and opened an email from a friend.

He is another minister.

He had been reading a magazine for church leaders and had come across an article from a minister by the name of Jarrid Wilson.

Jarrid, like many of us, is concerned about the rise in the number of sayings, quotes and platitudes that seem to find their way onto websites such as Facebook.

They sound very nice, often; they sound plausible, even; but also they are often just plain wrong.

Whereas it used to be that, to find your way into print, you needed to have some credibility in order for a publisher to commit time and resources to publishing what you had to say, people now can get published on the internet or quoted on websites who have no track record, no authority and – what is more – often no academic qualifications to back up what they are saying.
