What we can learn from Jesus being tested by the devil in the wilderness

March 10, 2025 by 2

Sunday 09 March 2025 is the First Sunday in Lent.

Lent is the period of six weeks (40 days, not including Sundays) leading up to Easter, the most important festival in the Christian calendar. Lent starts on what is known as Ash Wednesday. The last week of Lent is called Holy Week. In 2025, the beginning of Lent is on Wednesday 05 March and its end on Thursday 17 April.

Today’s theme, as taken up by our Minister, Rev. Geoff McKee, revolves around the story of Jesus – shortly after his baptism – and his period of 40 days in the desert, being tempted by the Devil.

We had a technical problem with recording today’s service on video and so there are a couple of audio recordings here: one of the All-Age Talk; the other of the Sermon.

Why your current role in life is where you should be serving God

February 9, 2025 by 2

Sunday 09 February 2025 is the Fifth Sunday after the Epiphany.

Rev. Geoff McKee’s sermon uses the imagery of a boat at sea to illustrate the Christian journey.

The text draws parallels between biblical accounts of encounters with God – from Isaiah, Paul, and the disciples – and highlights a common pattern of epiphany, unworthiness, reassurance, commission, and obedience.

Geoff connects this pattern to the everyday lives of Christians, emphasising that faithfulness in your current life role – whatever that may be (and however “unworthy” it is, in your eyes) – is a form of service to God.

The architectural features of the church building itself—specifically, the boat-shaped nave—are used to reinforce this central metaphor.

Finally, the story of King Henry III of Bavaria is presented as an example of finding God’s will in unexpected places.

Today’s main scriptural reading from the Bible

Luke 5:1-11 (from “The Message” Translation of the Bible)

A Service for Everyone in Lossiemouth – World Day of Prayer 2025

February 8, 2025 by 2

Lossiemouth Church of Scotland will hold a service for the World Day of Prayer on Friday, 07 March 2025 at 2.00pm.

Everyone is welcome.

The World Day of Prayer worship service has a special annual theme which is developed by women of a different country each year. A national committee then prepares an order of service on that theme.

For 2025, the theme is “I made you wonderful” (Psalm 139:14), developed by women from the Cook Islands in the Pacific Ocean.
