Sunday School Seeks New Members

January 31, 2016 by 2

Graham (Crawford, our Minister) was telling us  a funny poem about an oak tree:

Do not worry if your job is small
With rewards you can’t see.
Just remember that the mighty oak
Was once a nut, like me.

He then talked to us about the Sequoia tree, which is a mighty tree that grows from a tiny seed.  It takes 3000 Sequoia seeds to make up one ounce (however much that is!).

He said that a fully grown Sequoia would be as wide as Prospect Terrace (the road outside St James’ Church). In the US, roads go through Sequoia trees.

Giant Sequoia tree with a road through its base
A giant sequoia tree with a hole in the base large enough for a car to drive through

Graham spoke about Jesus’ parable of the mustard seed (Matthew 13: 31-32 The Message)

“God’s kingdom is like a pine nut that a farmer plants. It is quite small as seeds go, but in the course of years it grows into a huge pine tree, and eagles build nests in it.”

At the moment, our Good News Club (Sunday School) is small in number but big on Emilys (according to Emily).

The Good News Club meets every Sunday from about 11.20 am to about 12 noon (during the morning service at St James).

The good things about coming to the Good News Club are –

  • you get to meet Emily;
  • you get to learn about God with Emily;
  • you get to do craft with Emily.

The bad things about coming to the Good News Club have had to be edited because they originally included reference to a close relative of Emily.

One of the bad things about Good News Club we can mention is that you have to get up early (by 10.30 am) in order to get here.

We use the Scripture Union “Light” materials at Good News Club. These are easy to follow and give lots of great ideas. They also work whether you have 3 people, 30 people or 300 people.  (We don’t get 300 people very often – or 30, for that matter).

We have a Praise Band – called “The Prospects” – and their current lead singer is … well, you can probably guess who it is.  At the moment, the band has bass, vocals and drums. We could do with a few more performers.

We would be very happy if you decided to come to the Good News Club.  (There are other people to meet here, apart from Emily).

You don’t have to be nutty, but it helps.
