Under Whose Authority

June 7, 2015 by 2

Rev. Graham Crawford’s Sermon for Sunday 07 June 2015:

At the school my brother attended, one of the sports options in the Summer term was cricket. It was the option he chose.

After about a week or so, he came home from school and announced that he needed a pair of cricket gloves: the gloves that batsmen wear to protect their hands. According to my brother, everyone else had their own gloves, so he needed a pair.

Of course, when my parents investigated, it was a load of rubbish. Yes, there were one or two boys who had their own pair, but most just used a pair out of the school kit bag.

This proved very unfortunate for me because, as the younger brother, whenever I really needed something when I was growing up, my folks would look at me and just say: “Cricket gloves”.

There is always a desire among young people to have what everyone else has, or what they perceive everyone else has. Whether it is a particular pair of shoes, rucksack for school, make of boot for football. There is the desire to fit in.

But it does not just happen to young people; it happens to nations and even churches. Countries look at what other countries have got and decide they want it too, which often starts a war. Even churches can look enviously at other churches and say “We want that” – even if it is entirely inappropriate. [Read more…]

What are we doing here?

Trinity Sunday sermon by Rev. Graham Crawford – 31 May 2015 –

This morning I want to start by reminding you of our call to worship this morning:

Honour the Lord, you heavenly beings; honour the Lord for his glory and strength. 2 Honour the Lord for the glory of his name. Worship the Lord in the splendour of his holiness.

This summoning to worship invites us into the heavenly court and encourages us to glorify God in His holiness, acknowledging Him as LORD.

It is a reminder to us that what we do here is not about us. It is not about what makes us feel good or what we can take away to support us through the week. Worship is about God and God alone. [Read more…]

Where to now, God?

May 24, 2015 by 2

This is Rev. Graham Crawford’s sermon for 24 May 2015 (Pentecost Sunday):

Inevitably, given the debates over the last few years, various groups have formed within the Kirk: some more liberal, some more conservative.

I happen to be part of two of these groups:

  • Church of Scotland Evangelical Network, and
  • the Covenant Fellowship.

Here is the confession of the Covenant Fellowship:-

“I believe that the Church of Scotland is moving away from its roots in Scripture and the Westminster Confession of Faith. I believe that the time has come for the creation of a ‘Covenant Fellowship’ within the Church. This Covenant Fellowship will draw together those who believe that the Scriptures, in their entirety, are the Word of God and must provide the basis for everything we believe and do. This vision is nothing less than the reformation and renewal of the Church of Scotland, in accordance with the Word of God, and by the empowering of his life-giving Spirit.”

I believe that, on this Pentecost Sunday, this renewal by the empowering of the Holy Spirit is the most crucial thing that we need at this time. [Read more…]

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: the old has gone, the new is here! (2 Cor 5:17 NIV)

We are delighted to welcome Roger Jones and his Christian Music Ministries team to St James again – for the 5th time, in fact – as we participate in another of his wonderful musicals. [Read more…]

“He’s gone, now what?”

May 17, 2015 by 2

This is the Sunday morning sermon by Rev Graham Crawford for 17 May 2015 (Luke 24: 44 – 53, Ephesians 1: 15 – 23):

Jesus is alive, we claim.

In some traditions, we should have opened every service between Easter and Pentecost with the minister proclaiming: ‘Christ is risen’, with you, the congregation, shouting back (not just murmuring under your breath): ‘Alleliua!’

But on what basis do we make that claim? [Read more…]

Rev. Geoff McKee retires

October 5, 2025 By 2

Geoff McKee is retiring as Minister of Lossiemouth Church of Scotland.

His last day of ministry is 31 October 2025.

He conducted worship for the last time (as its minister) at Lossiemouth Church of Scotland on Sunday 28 September 2025.

There was a “thank you” concert held for Geoff and his wife, Annie, in the Church on Saturday 27 September 2025 at 2pm.

We wish Geoff and Annie a long, happy and healthy retirement. We will miss them terribly but we are grateful for the time we have had together and for their ministry and faithful service in Lossiemouth. Your retirement is well-earned!
