Midweek Fellowship Online in Lossiemouth

May 20, 2020 by 2

As we have all been missing times of fellowship together and with no prospect of a return to meetings in our buildings in the near future, Rev. Geoff McKee thought it would be good to offer a short online fellowship option.

Our first meeting took place on 20 May 2020 at 7:00pm.

It involved some of the elders, managers, board members, members and adherents of St Gerardine’s High Church and St James’ Church.

The meeting included some prayers, a Bible reading and some devotional thoughts – and a bit of a chat.

The plan is to continue the meetings every Wednesday evening with further readings from 1 John.

If you would like to join us for these meetings, get in touch with Geoff via gmckee@churchofscotland.org.uk or send an Online Enquiry on this website.

1 John 1:1-4 (New International Version)
The Incarnation of the Word of Life
1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched—this we proclaim concerning the Word of life. 2 The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us. 3 We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. 4 We write this to make our[a] joy complete.

What about this new world that is before us?

May 16, 2020 by 2

Welcome to the virtual service for the 6th Sunday of Easter (17 May 2020).

Rev. Geoff McKee’s sermon is below in audio format. It is based on John 14:15-21 in which Jesus promises the Holy Spirit to his disciples.

We set out all four Scriptures for this week from the Lectionary, including the passage from John’s gospel. You’ll also find the prayers and a choice of music at the end.

The following is taken from the Church of Scotland website for this week.

“In the days following the first Easter Sunday, the disciples of Jesus would have gone through any number of different reactions, from uncertainty and anxiety to joy and celebration, through incomprehension and fear to recognition and hope. If the Cross had robbed them of his presence, the Resurrection has restored his presence. Surely Jesus will continue to be with them always?”

“The Gospel of John (14: 1-21) portrays the disciples wrestling with the dawning reality that Jesus will not continue to be physically present to them. It would seem that they are again to be left bereft and ‘orphaned’. Uncertainty and anxiety threaten once more. In response, Jesus speaks into their incomprehension and fear with the promise of the gift of the Holy Spirit. Jesus reassures them that they are not alone and that his spiritual presence will be renewed in this world through the Spirit. Jesus, through the Spirit, continues with us always as the assurance of God’s love for us.”

Why there is room in the Christian family for everyone

May 9, 2020 by 2

Welcome to the virtual service for the 5th Sunday of Easter – 10 May 2020

You’ll find all of today’s Scriptures from the Lectionary, the sermon as audio and the prayers as text. Rev. Geoff McKee’s sermon is based on John 14:1-14, below, which is a well-known passage.

Geoff returns to a repeating theme – that, as Christians, we must constantly remind ourselves that we are in the biggest family in the world and there is room in it for everyone.

Why we must be careful what we pretend to be

May 2, 2020 by 2

This is a virtual service for the 4th Sunday of Easter – 03 May 2020.

Below, you will find audio of Rev. Geoff McKee’s sermon, the Scriptures from the Lectionary for this week (including the reading from John 10 which is the basis of the sermon), prayers and some music (Stuart Townend’s lovely version of The Lord’s My Shepherd – Psalm 23).

Scripture

Acts 2:42-47 (New International Version)
The Fellowship of the Believers
42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. 43 Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. 44 All the believers were together and had everything in common. 45 They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. 46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47 praising God and enjoying the favour of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.

Psalm 23
A psalm of David.
1 The LORD is my shepherd, I lack nothing.
2 He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters,
3 he refreshes my soul.
He guides me along the right paths
for his name’s sake.
4 Even though I walk
through the darkest valley,
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.
5 You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
6 Surely your goodness and love will follow me
all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the LORD
forever.

Recognising the risen Christ by the breaking of bread (The Supper at Emmaus)

April 25, 2020 by 2

Two of Jesus’ disciples walk from Jerusalem to the village of Emmaus in the aftermath of the shattering events leading up to Jesus’ crucifixion.

The resurrected Jesus’ joins them on their way but in their despair and fatigue they don’t recognise him. He explains to them how what has just happened has all been foretold in Scripture.

On reaching the village, they persuade Jesus to stay and eat a meal with them.

According to Luke’s gospel (24:30-31): “When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. 31 Then their eyes were opened and they recognised him, and he disappeared from their sight.”

(Sorry that is such a small version of Caravaggio’s painting but we’re not sure about the copyright issues. Here is a link to a much larger version of the image, with options to zoom in and out on the details).

In his sermon for the third Sunday of Easter, Rev. Geoff McKee discusses why we need the guidance and encouragement of Jesus – the one who comes along beside. The one who makes sense of our sight.

Other devices are available but, on a PC, for example, if you right-click on the 3 vertical dots at the right side of the audio player, the drop-down menu should offer the option to “Save as…”
