Why having low expectations in life to avoid disappointment is a bad plan

January 16, 2021 by 2

The virtual service for 17 January 2021 is available on this page. It is the Second Sunday after the Epiphany.

The service includes scripture readings, prayers, a sermon and, below the video further down, a musical selection chosen by Kath Robertson.

The Lectionary readings this week are: 1 Samuel 3:1-20 and Psalm 139:1-6, 13-18;
1 Corinthians 6:12-20 and John 1:43-51. Geoff reads these as part of the service.

The sermon is based on the text from John’s Gospel and that Bible passage set out below for you. It is the story of how Jesus called Philip and Nathanael as disciples.

Rev. Geoff McKee contrasts different commentators’ views and reflects on whether meagre expectations of life serve us best or, as he argues, if we’re not expecting so much more than that then we cannot live as we have been made to live.

How Mark’s writing style helps to focus the Gospel message

January 8, 2021 by 2

Sunday 10 January 2021 is the First Sunday after Epiphany.

This is a virtual service and, for the first time, the sermon, readings and prayers are all presented in video format, by Rev. Geoff McKee, below.

The Lectionary readings are: Genesis 1:1-5; Psalm 29; Acts 19:1-7; and Mark 1:4-13.

The passage from Mark forms the basis for Geoff’s sermon and it is set out immediately below, with the (video) prayers/readings/sermon below that and, finally, Katherine Robertson’s musical selection.

A cautionary tale to ensure we are open to God and his purposes

January 2, 2021 by 2

A very Happy New Year to you all!

The first Sunday of the New Year – 03 January 2021 – is the Epiphany of the Lord: the Magi’s visit to Jesus, the Messiah.

The Lectionary readings are: Isaiah 60:1-6; Psalm 72:1-7, 10-14; Ephesians 3:1-12; and Matthew 2:1-12. The main reading is from Matthew.

“Can we trust the science?” is an ever-relevant question. The Magi were the scientists of their age. In seeking out the Messiah, they trusted in their scientific observations and interpretations. By comparing and contrasting their apporach with that of King Herod, we reveal a cautionary tale which reminds us always to ensure that we are open to God and his purposes for us.

Below, you will find the prayers, readings, audio sermon and a musical selection.

God is on the move and the world will never be the same

December 25, 2020 by 2

Welcome to this virtual service for Christmas Day 2020.

Rev. Geoff McKee’s audio sermon, below, has as its basis, of course, the story of the birth of Jesus from Luke, Chapter 2, but it also contains entertaining and illuminating references to The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Sherlock Holmes and the Wright Brothers.

Easter Sunday 2026 – He is Risen but how do we still have Hope?

April 5, 2026 By 2

“Christ is Risen, He is Risen Indeed!”

Happy Easter!

One modern-day thinker respected by the Church of Scotland in its approach to theology is Dr Timothy Keller (1950 – 2023) – see, for example, the pamphlet “What can I say?” (link to PDF download).

In a world ravaged by war, poverty and fear, on this Easter Sunday, arguably the happiest day of the year in the Christian calendar, here are some words you might like to hear – from Tim Keller.

In an interview recorded with Matt Smethurst in 2021, Tim Keller was asked if he could give any words of reassurance to Christians who are nervous about the future.

At that time, Tim was terminally ill with pancreatic cancer.

The reference to “Kathy” is to his wife.
