Knowing what it means to be forgiven and to forgive

July 27, 2023 by 2

23 July 2023 is the Eighth Sunday after Pentecost. The main Bible reading today is the Parable of the Prodigal Son from Luke’s Gospel.

Shafts of Sunlight at Lossiemouth West Beach, July 2023.

Main Bible Reading for today

Luke 15:11-32 (from The Message Bible Translation)
The Story of the Lost Son
11-12 Then he said, “There was once a man who had two sons. The younger said to his father, ‘Father, I want right now what’s coming to me.’

12-16 “So the father divided the property between them. It wasn’t long before the younger son packed his bags and left for a distant country. There, undisciplined and dissipated, he wasted everything he had. After he had gone through all his money, there was a bad famine all through that country and he began to feel it. He signed on with a citizen there who assigned him to his fields to slop the pigs. He was so hungry he would have eaten the corn-cobs in the pig slop, but no one would give him any.

17-20 “That brought him to his senses. He said, ‘All those farmhands working for my father sit down to three meals a day, and here I am starving to death. I’m going back to my father. I’ll say to him, Father, I’ve sinned against God, I’ve sinned before you; I don’t deserve to be called your son. Take me on as a hired hand.’ He got right up and went home to his father.

20-21 “When he was still a long way off, his father saw him. His heart pounding, he ran out, embraced him, and kissed him. The son started his speech: ‘Father, I’ve sinned against God, I’ve sinned before you; I don’t deserve to be called your son ever again.’

22-24 “But the father wasn’t listening. He was calling to the servants, ‘Quick. Bring a clean set of clothes and dress him. Put the family ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Then get a prize-winning heifer and roast it. We’re going to feast! We’re going to have a wonderful time! My son is here—given up for dead and now alive! Given up for lost and now found!’ And they began to have a wonderful time.

25-27 “All this time his older son was out in the field. When the day’s work was done he came in. As he approached the house, he heard the music and dancing. Calling over one of the houseboys, he asked what was going on. He told him, ‘Your brother came home. Your father has ordered a feast—barbecued beef!—because he has him home safe and sound.’

28-30 “The older brother stomped off in an angry sulk and refused to join in. His father came out and tried to talk to him, but he wouldn’t listen. The son said, ‘Look how many years I’ve stayed here serving you, never giving you one moment of grief, but have you ever thrown a party for me and my friends? Then this son of yours who has thrown away your money on whores shows up and you go all out with a feast!’

31-32 “His father said, ‘Son, you don’t understand. You’re with me all the time, and everything that is mine is yours—but this is a wonderful time, and we had to celebrate. This brother of yours was dead, and he’s alive! He was lost, and he’s found!’”

Will the Christian Faith spread best by audience targeting?

July 16, 2023 by 2

16 July 2023 is the Seventh Sunday after Pentecost. The main Bible text for this week is the Parable of the Sower – one of Jesus’ teachings – from Matthew’s Gospel.

In this story, the “farmer” is God and the seeds are the message (i.e. the Good News of Jesus coming to save the world from sin).

How does Jesus recommend we are to spread the Word? Should we be targeting specific demographics? Or should we “sow the seed” indiscriminately?

Should we sow the ‘seed’ of God’s Good News with deliberate care or with abandon?

How to get your life back (and live freely and lightly)

July 9, 2023 by 2

Sunday 09 July 2023 is the Sixth Sunday of Pentecost.

Today’s “How to” answer is, as you probably guessed, “Jesus”. As with many of these things, at first sight it may seem contradictory but Rev. Geoff McKee explains it all in his sermon. In the words of Eugene Peterson (from The Message, below), it’s about learning “the unforced rhythms of grace”.

Today’s main Bible readings

Matthew 11:16-19 (from The Message translation of the Bible)
16-19 “How can I account for this generation? The people have been like spoiled children whining to their parents, ‘We wanted to skip rope, and you were always too tired; we wanted to talk, but you were always too busy.’ John came fasting and they called him crazy. I came feasting and they called me a boozer, a friend of the misfits. Opinion polls don’t count for much, do they? The proof of the pudding is in the eating.”

Matthew 11:25-30
25-26 Abruptly Jesus broke into prayer: “Thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth. You’ve concealed your ways from sophisticates and know-it-alls, but spelled them out clearly to ordinary people. Yes, Father, that’s the way you like to work.”

27 Jesus resumed talking to the people, but now tenderly. “The Father has given me all these things to do and say. This is a unique Father-Son operation, coming out of Father and Son intimacies and knowledge. No one knows the Son the way the Father does, nor the Father the way the Son does. But I’m not keeping it to myself; I’m ready to go over it line by line with anyone willing to listen.

28-30 “Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.”

Why Christians must be both care-givers and care-receivers

July 2, 2023 by 2

Sunday 02 July 2023 is the Fifth Sunday after Pentecost.

Rev. Geoff McKee continues his review of ‘hard teachings’ of Jesus, with today’s main scripture the following:

Main Bible Reading for today

Matthew 10:40-42 (from The Message transaltion of the Bible)

40-42 “We are intimately linked in this harvest work. Anyone who accepts what you do, accepts me, the One who sent you. Anyone who accepts what I do accepts my Father, who sent me. Accepting a messenger of God is as good as being God’s messenger. Accepting someone’s help is as good as giving someone help. This is a large work I’ve called you into, but don’t be overwhelmed by it. It’s best to start small. Give a cool cup of water to someone who is thirsty, for instance. The smallest act of giving or receiving makes you a true apprentice. You won’t lose out on a thing.”

(The “Simple Welcome”) is at the heart of Christianity. It is the most difficult of graces to offer because it cuts straight to the heart of our faith. We can only offer a welcome to the hungry and the thirsty and the abused when we have first received a welcome as people who are hungry and thirsty and abused. Our God has welcomed us first.

REV. GEOFF MCKEE

Mouth of the River Lossie from the East Beach - Detail

Sale of St Gerardine’s Church Buildings delayed by artefacts

February 1, 2026 By 2

By way of an update regarding the sale of the former St. Gerardine’s High Church buildings, the property is “under offer”.

In the (pre-new East Beach Bridge) photograph below, St. Gerardine’s is the building with the spire, more or less in the middle of the picture. The former St. James’ Church (which remains open, as part of Laich of Moray Parich Church – see further below) is the building with the very pointy spire, towards the right hand side of the photo.

Mouth of the River Lossie, Lossiemouth

There are three historic artefacts which remain in the church which will have to be removed before the sale can finally proceed. These are: the Kinneddar Pillar, Drainie Memorial and Stotfield Disaster Memorial Plaque.

The Kirk Session of Laich of Moray Parish Church (formerly, until 31 January 2026, Lossiemouth Parish Church) are doing their best to relocate these items.

The Kirk Session have probably been able to find a new home for the Disaster Memorial Plaque but are still seeking a suitable place or places for the other two artefacts.

We have several local organisations and people assisting in this search, for whose help we are very grateful.

We will provide a further update whenever possible. Recent photos of the 3 historic artefacts are set out below.
